Dystopian films: this century's biggest cinema hit Dystopian films take you into alternate universes where all information, thoughts, and freedom are either restricted, censored, or both, the constant surveillance of citizens, and much more
When watching dystopian films, there are many common traits within them all. The lighting used tends to be sparse and contrasty. This plays into the set design, which is usually in an abandoned town or falling civilization. The use of long shots, close-up shots, tracking shots, and more develop the setting and give the story context within each scene. Colors also play an important role in this process. The range of colors usually consists of very neutral tones, white, black, and blue to emphasize the general genre characteristics. This lack of color is heavily seen in characters, the general world around them, and even in personalities.
Because this genre is very popular, it's aimed at teenagers and young adults of both genders ages 13-30. The marketing team focuses heavily on using trailers to build suspenseful ideas and leave the audience on the edge of their seats to get them to see their movie. They also create movie posters with dark backgrounds and bold images to highlight the main characters in movies.
A great example of a dystopian film is Maze Runner. This sci-fi series is about a group of teenagers being used in a big science experiment they don't even know they're a part of. These teens partake in an action-packed adventure to get them out of the only place they know as home. This is a great example of a dystopian film because these teens are trying to find their way out of a maze that's controlled by the scientists who put them there and, as they do so, find a way to beat the people controlling them.
Another example is The Hunger Dames. This is about a society of sectors that, every year, picks people to compete to the death in a chance to bring victoriously. This fits the dystopian because it's a very controlled society and harsh conditions.
Some dystopian honorable mentions include Divergent, the 5th Wave, A Quiett Placee, the Giver, the Host, and The matrix. These movies fit in to building the scientific genre of dystopian films.
